This article is from Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology. Part A, Molecular & Integrative Physiology, volume 173. Here, we promote cichlid fishes (Perciformes: Cichlidae) as a system in which to study the physiological and evolutionary significance of carotenoids. Gaps in our knowledge are discussed in the last part of this review, particularly in the understanding of carotenoid metabolism pathways and the genetics

isolation and sex steroid effects on the expression of the ATP-binding cassette transporter ABCB6 in Harderian glands of hamster (Mesocricetus auratus)” Comparative,Biochemistry and Physiology, Part A 232 (2019) 40–46 ATP-Binding Cassette, subfamily B, member 6 (ABCB6) is a transporter that is upregulated by elevated intracellular porphyrin concentrations. ABCB6's cDNA sequence presents an open reading frame (ORF) of 2529 bp that encodes a predicted 842-amino acid (aa) protein with a molecular weight of 93 transporter has a small effect on porphyrin trafficking in the HGs of hamsters.

Comparative biochemistry and physiology in Brazil: A critical appraisal Therefore, we felt that it was important to critically discuss the state of comparative biochemistry and physiology in this country. Overall, our data shows that comparative biochemistry and physiology is a lively and productive discipline, but that some biases limit the scope of the biology techniques in a comparative or evolutionary context. Comparative biochemistry and physiology in Latin America over the last decade (1997–2006) We investigate the distribution of Latin American comparative biochemistry and physiology across subject areas and systematic groups. Questions regarding the physiology of wild animals are particularly common, but comparative approaches to study practical issues are also well represented Many taxa of wild animals are represented by just one or a few studies, thus limited information is available about a large number of Latin American species Comparative Biochemistry Physiology

Pinniped diving response mechanism and evolution: a window on the paradigm of comparative biochemistry and physiology Starting even before the end of World War II, the discipline of comparative physiology and biochemistry experienced a period of unprecedented growth and caused a kind of renaissance in mechanistic physiology studies. physiology arose, and this research area too is now in a growth phase. Stress response and adaptation: A new molecular toolkit for the 21st century Much research in comparative biochemistry is focused on understanding the molecular mechanisms that allow organisms to adapt to and survive diverse environmental Advances in comparative biochemistry have always drawn upon conceptual and technological advances that arise from “mainline” biochemistry and molecular The present article discusses three such advances that will have major impacts on comparative biochemistry in the 21st century.

Comparative physiology investigations support a role for histidine-containing dipeptides in intracellular acid–base regulation of skeletal muscle Comparative investigations of the HCD content of various species provide unique insight into their most likely mechanisms of action. This review chronologically describes how the comparative physiology studies, conducted since the beginning of the 20th century, have shaped our understanding The investigation of a wide range of physiologically distinct species indicates that those species with a strong reliance on non-oxidative forms of energy Biochemistry Comparative physiology

The structure and function of the pseudobranch has long interested scientists, but its overall role has remained a mystery. perfusate was found to be largely independent of flow between perfusion rates of 120–190 μl/min and could be inhibited by acetazolamide (10−5 M), indicating a enzyme profiles for the rainbow trout, cod, swordfish and deep-water grenadier pseudobranch, it is suggested that the pentose phosphate shunt might be a

However, studies with all vertebrate groups are essential for a more complete understanding of the mechanisms involved in the regulation of Tb.

Yet, comparative cardiovascular physiologists have been relatively conservative in constructing a new (or at least modified) conceptual framework for the We have suggested that three methodologies in particular be incorporated to a greater extent in studies of comparative cardiovascular development: (a)
